When the world sleeps, they code.
This October, hundreds of Nepali engineering students will stay awake for 24 straight hours, not for exams or assignments, but for something much bigger: IEEEXtreme 19.0, one of the most prestigious global coding marathons organized by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
With more than 19,000 participants from over 70 countries in its last edition, IEEEXtreme has become a global stage where young innovators test their endurance, logic, and creativity against some of the brightest minds in the world. And this year, Nepal is ready to make its mark.
From Nepal to the World
IEEE, the world’s largest professional body for engineers, has always stood for innovation, collaboration, and progress. Its Nepal Section, home to active student branches at Pulchowk, Thapathali, KEC, NCIT, and nec, has been connecting Nepali students to this global network of problem-solvers.
For the 2025 edition, the event will be held in a hybrid format on 25–26 October (2082 Kartik 8–9), allowing students to compete both online and in person. Pulchowk and other leading colleges will host on-site participants with full arrangements including meals, Wi-Fi, rest areas, and supervision, ensuring an international-standard experience.
Engineering Excellence, Nepali Passion
In IEEEXtreme 18.0, Nepal proudly fielded over 40 teams and 79 participants, setting a strong foundation. This year’s goal is even higher: to increase participation and push Nepal’s global ranking further up the list.
Behind the scenes, the effort is coordinated by the IEEE Nepal Section with guidance from passionate student leaders and experienced faculty mentors.
Proctors from Tribhuvan University and Pokhara University, including Dr. Arun Kumar Timalsina and Mr. Daya Sagar Baral, will ensure the contest runs smoothly and maintains its competitive integrity.
Global Stage, Local Glory
While global winners will walk away with impressive rewards such as fully funded trips to international IEEE conferences and cash prizes up to $400 per team member, IEEE Nepal is also introducing local awards to celebrate homegrown talent.
Top Nepali participants will receive cash prizes, certificates, and official recognition from IEEE Nepal, turning the event into both a national and global celebration of innovation.
Why It Matters
Beyond rankings and prizes, IEEEXtreme 19.0 represents a growing movement where Nepali students step onto the global digital stage with skill, courage, and creativity.
It is a reminder that while resources may be limited, talent and determination are not. A student coding late at night in Pulchowk or Thapathali can stand shoulder to shoulder with peers from MIT or Stanford. And perhaps, the next big idea in technology could be written in Nepal, somewhere between the buzz of laptops and the warmth of black coffee.
