The country has a government consisting of the first largest party in the parliament, the Congress, and the second largest party, the UML. To make the government successful, the Congress-UML have formed a ten-member mechanism. Congress General Secretary Gagan Thapa, who is also a member of the same mechanism, made a statement a few days ago – the middlemen have access to the Prime Minister’s bedroom.
Such a statement by a member of the very mechanism that made the government successful naturally raised doubts in the government. Thapa’s statement came at a time when Pushpa Kamal Dahal, the chairman of the main opposition party, the Maoist Center, was making claims that the government would fall.
A situation of ‘what if’ had already been created when Dahal announced the formation of a new government. Moreover, after a member of the mechanism that would make the government successful made such a statement, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli immediately called in Congress leader Sher Bahadur Deuba and had a lengthy conversation.
After this, reports and analyses were conducted saying that there were various problems and doubts in the government (coalition). At the same time, Congress leaders say that what General Secretary Thapa said was the opinion of the Congress. Min Bishwakarma, a leader close to President Deuba, has said, ‘That opinion is the opinion of the Congress.’
Stating that the government is unable to address the dissatisfaction of the citizens, Bishwakarma added, “The government had to change its working style. The General Secretary gave suggestions on behalf of the mechanism. The President also gave suggestions. However, when there are no results, there is no way to say that everything is fine. The opposition party is looking for an alternative to the government. We, the ruling party, are looking for an alternative to the government’s working style.”
In fact, some Congress leaders had already started criticizing the government under Oli’s leadership since its formation. Leaders including Dr. Shekhar Koirala, Gagan Thapa, Bishwaprakash Sharma have said that the government did not start well.
At this point, discontent has been growing within the government’s main ally, the Nepali Congress. This has begun to be seen publicly. Following this, the Nepali Congress has called a meeting. President Deuba has tried to convince the leaders through the meeting.
