In the heart of Pulchowk Campus, a different kind of engineering is happening — not of bridges or machines, but of courage, unity, and resistance. Classrooms have momentarily turned into spaces of collective assertion, and the whiteboards now carry not just formulas, but bold demands for dignity, autonomy, and the future of engineering education in Nepal.
The Roots of the Movement: A Legacy Under Threat
Since 2055 B.S., the Institute of Engineering Studies (इन्जिनियरिङ अध्ययन संस्थान – E.A.S.) has operated with academic, economic, and administrative autonomy. This decentralization wasn’t just a policy it was a promise: that Nepal’s future engineers would be nurtured in an environment free from political interference and bureaucratic stagnation.
But today, that promise stands on shaky ground.
Recent attempts to erode the Institute’s independence have triggered a powerful movement led by professors, backed by students, and fueled by a common vision: protecting the soul of engineering education in Nepal.

This Is Not Just a Protest-It’s a Declaration
In the words of those leading the movement:
This is not a dirty face, this is the vision of gaining rights!
We want to read, but with respect. We want to teach, but with authority.
This movement has redefined roles. Teachers are no longer just instructors, and students no longer just learners. They have become guardians of an institution, united by shared values, shared frustrations, and a shared dream of a system where quality education comes with freedom, and research thrives in dignity.
Student Union Stands Strong: Solidarity at Its Core
The Free Student Union of Pulchowk Campus has reaffirmed its complete support for the movement. In a public statement, they echoed:
“This is not just a teachers’ issue. This is our future. This is about safeguarding the dignity of education itself.”
Their presence in the professors’ recent programs sent a powerful message that real change demands collective resolve, not just isolated resistance.
They’ve made their demands clear:
- Immediate action from Tribhuvan University and campus administration.
- Restoration of a peaceful academic environment.
- Respectful and prompt addressing of faculty concerns.
This isn’t about politics. It’s about principle.

Toward a Bigger Dream: A Separate Engineering University?
A new idea is gaining momentum:
Maybe it’s time for Nepal to have a dedicated engineering university one that operates free from unnecessary interference, with full academic and structural autonomy.
What was once whispered in canteens is now being spoken aloud in assemblies.
What was once a quiet frustration is now a growing storm of change.

Autonomy Is Not a Privilege It’s a Foundation
Behind the chants and locked gates, this movement carries a larger truth:
- You cannot build the future of a country on a foundation of silence.
- Quality education doesn’t come from control, but from trust.
- And progress is not possible without participation.
The unity of Pulchowk students and teachers standing together is not just inspiring. It’s historic. And it reminds us:
The true strength of an institution lies not in its buildings, but in its people.

स्वायत्त इ.अ.सं., सबल इ.अ.सं.
This is not just a slogan anymore. It is a movement. A moment. A message.
